and how we do it

"Teaching them how to earn things rather than taking things... show them that there's an easier way to do stuff than thinking that going to jail is normal."

Bikes Mwerre isn't just about bikes; it's a unique, community-driven approach bringing positive change to kids and communities in Central Australia. They get young people riding, fixing, and engaging, boosting wellbeing and cutting down on youth offending. This isn't soft – it's smart. It teaches hard work and responsibility. As local dad Tyrone put it, "I reckon [Bikes Mwerre] just shows the kids that there are people that care." Since 2022, they've repaired 388 bikes, hosted 169 activities, and partnered with 20 organisations. That's tangible proof they're building safer, more resilient communities, hand-in-hand with locals! - Smarter Justice Campaign

Bikes Mwerre serves the local Mparntwe community in fun and engaging ways that promote health and positive recreation;

  • Bike riding sessions - including road safety mapped to the national curriculum

  • Bike fixing clinics: providing tools, spare parts and assistance for participants to fix their bikes

  • Action-packed school holiday programs

  • Build a bike: targeted program where participants build up a bike to keep

  • We also organise family-friendly events, skill-building courses and tailored programs

We believe every kid deserves a bike, and that riding builds confidence, resilience, positive recreational culture and community

We employ a community development framework, focussing on strengths and building up local capacity and assets.

This means engaging with schools, councils and other community organisations to design culturally responsive programs and events that really suit the needs and aspirations of the local community. Each project is different, shaped by the local community through ongoing consultation. Our activities and approach have been proven through numerous successful partnerships, and externally evaluated.

Through our programs we empower local community members, create employment and leadership pathways.
