BMX In-School Sessions at The Skate Park

Centralian Middle School approached us to provide a practical BMX riding session at the Newland Skate and Play Precinct as part of the schools launch of a Project-Based Learning unit focused on safe risk-taking and decision-making.

We designed a session plan based on the needs and levels of the students and the learning outcomes from CMS.

The session involved an informal discussion so Bikes Mwerre instructors could understand what information the students knew about safe risk taking and decision making and how this would look and play out in a real life setting such as at the skate park. We chatted about skate park etiquette and then divided the students into groups based on their riding levels and confidence, allowing them the opportunity to flow between groups as the session progressed. Almost all students participated in the riding element for some of all of the session.

Bikes Mwerre instructors taught different elements of the skate park and discussed throughout the riding element, with students about safe risking taking, self and spacial awareness, knowing your own limits and making decisions based on these factors. Instructors were clear, supportive and encouraging to students whilst making the session engaging, diverse and inclusive.

We are thankful for the invitation to work together with CMS and to provide young people the skills to enjoy public spaces safely and with confidence outside of a school setting.
