Titjikala School Holidays Bike Program
Titjikala Holidays Bike Program
From the 5th to the 9th of January, the Bikes Mwerre team delivered a school holidays bike program for kids in the Titjikala community, 120 km south of Alice Springs.
Despite the hot and dry conditions, the kids (and a few adults) joined the team to get their hands on some recycled bikes, fix up some of their own bikes, and most importantly—ride bikes!
Around 30 kids took part in the program over four days, fixing flat tyres, replacing seats and bar grips, and learning about different parts of ongoing bike maintenance to keep bikes strong and rideable into the future (there was also plenty of time for working on our wheelie skills!).
20 bikes were delivered with support from Bikes Mwerre partners at Revolve ReCycling and our mates at Outback Cycling.
Strong bikes and strong bike riding skills play a huge role in giving kids in remote communities something to do over the school holiday period, especially during the extended Christmas–New Year break.
The Titjikala Bikes Mwerre school holidays program is part of the MacDonnell Ranges Regional Council school holidays program, bringing fun and productive activities and programs to kids in remote communities around Central Australia.
